After Succumbing to Pancreatic Cancer, Local 1534 Member’s Family Needs Our Help

Together with Local 1534 (Chicago, Ill.), SMART-TD is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Brother Ricky Karlecke, who passed away on June 21, 2026, at only 41 years old.

A beloved father, husband, and union brother, he leaves behind his wife, Rachel, and two young children.

As a conductor for CSX, Brother Karlecke took great pride in his work and providing for his family. But in January of 2026, he began experiencing severe abdominal pain. After multiple hospital visits, tests, and procedures, he was diagnosed with an aggressive pancreatic cancer that had already spread throughout his body.

Because of how advanced Brother Karlecke’s cancer was and the severity of his symptoms, he was unable to work beginning in January though his passing on June 21.

A GoFundMe was originally established to help his family pay for some of the mounting expenses, including travel to and from appointments, basic household expenses and bills, and supporting his children. Now, those donations will be used to support his family and help pay for his final arrangements.

Since his diagnosis at the beginning of the year, earning an income has been the last thing on Brother Karlecke’s family’s mind. Their priorities have been centered on medical care involving lots of tests and hospital visits, a treatment path, and simply getting through the day.

With their already large financial burden now likely to grow even more with Brother Karlecke’s final expenses, any support that you can give to his family will make a difference.

41 years is far too short of a time on this Earth. As a union, let’s come together and help Brother Karlecke’s wife and children and ensure that they have one less thing to worry about as they prepare to lay him to rest.
