Local 166 Member Needs Our Help After Near-Fatal Heart Attack

June 22, 2026

After suffering a massive heart attack on the job, Albuquerque Amtrak conductor and SMART-TD Local 166 (Salt Lake City, Utah) member Paul Barnard is facing significant medical and household expenses as he recovers.

As union brothers and sisters, we always step up when one of our own is in need and now is the chance to do that once again.

To financially assist Brother Barnard, Local 166 President and fellow Amtrak conductor Klaus Hahn has set up a GoFundMe campaign.

Help Brother Barnard and his family with mounting expenses during his recovery ►

Known for his dedication to the railroad, his colleagues, and his union family, Brother Barnard’s unexpected heart attack required emergency surgery, which has taken a heavy toll on him, his loved ones, and those who are close to him.

Paul is currently unable to work, and it’s unknown when he’ll be able to return. As his recovery gets underway, his family is confronting a growing list of expenses, including medical deductibles and household bills.

Any contribution that you’re able to make will make a difference and help ease their financial burden as they navigate this challenging time together and focus on his healing.

Railroaders always take care of one another, and this is our chance to show Brother Barnard and his family that we’ve got their backs as they travel down the long road to recovery that lies ahead of them.
