Important Information:

On May 21st, 2024, you can vote for the union in the Break Room at 400 S. Blanchard Street, Valdosta, GA. Voting times are from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM and from 9:00 PM to 10:30 PM. Remember, you don’t need your supervisor’s permission to vote—just go when the polls are open. Your employer might change your work hours to make it hard for you to vote, but don’t let that stop you. Plan to vote no matter what time you start or finish work on voting day. This could be a trick to discourage you from voting, so it’s very important to make your voice heard!

We Know some of you are uneasy because it’s been 7 years of fighting for our Union Contract at UTLX. We get it – that’s a long time. The company has been trying to make you lose hope by dragging this out.

Here’s what’s really going on: The company is doing this on purpose. It’s a common trick by union-busting lawyers – they delay and delay, hoping you’ll give up.

But don’t lose faith. Over the past 12 months, U.S. Unions have seen record pay raises of 6.3%, far outweighing the non-union, which have barely kept up with inflation.

In February, we reached a deal with Union Tank Car Valdosta, with help from a Federal Mediator, for wage increases of 7%, 5%, 3%, 3%, and 3% over the next 5 years. The parties shook hands in agreement. We even got the company to agree to let us present the contract to you on their property.

Then they ghosted us!

They backed out of the deal. It’s pretty rich for the company to blame us when they’re the ones playing games.

Employers hire union-busting lawyers for several reasons

  1. Preserving Control and Power: Employers often view unions as a threat to their authority and control over workplace decisions. They may hire union-busting lawyers to prevent or dismantle unionization efforts in order to maintain their autonomy and power.
  2. Protecting Profit Margins: Unions may negotiate for higher wages, better benefits, and improved working conditions for employees, which can increase labor costs for employers. Employers may hire lawyers to resist unionization in order to protect their profit margins and avoid additional expenses associated with union contracts.
  3. Avoiding Change: Unionization can bring about changes to workplace policies, procedures, and management practices. Employers may resist these changes and hire lawyers to prevent unionization in order to maintain the status quo and avoid disruptions to their operations.
  4. Legal Compliance: Employers may hire lawyers to ensure that their actions during unionization efforts comply with labor laws and regulations. However, some union-busting tactics may push the boundaries of legality or involve unfair labor practices, prompting legal challenges and scrutiny.

UTLX Valdosta Union Committee 2023 Survey Results

We listened to your voice! Our committee conducted a worker survey to understand your thoughts on training quality, safety, favoritism, and work pressure. From July 24th to August 9th, 2023, we distributed an easy-to-fill 1-page survey, ensuring every worker had a chance to share anonymously. Out of 128 employees, 70 participated, providing valuable insights to guide our efforts towards a safer and fairer workplace.”
