Sister Story: Dawn Anderson

November 18, 2025

Local 12 (Southwestern Pa.) sheet metal worker Dawn Anderson discovered HVAC work by chance during Vo-Tech. Now, she’s a fourth-year apprentice with goals of becoming a drafter in the future. Learn more in her sister story:

What unique strengths do you bring to your trade?

I have always loved math and science. I love to learn new things everyday — it motivates me.

What do you love to do when you are not at work?

I read books, go fishing, camping and almost anything outdoors.

Goals in the future — any ambitions or changes to your career, growth or education?

My main goal would be to become a draftsman one day. I would love to study drafting more and become good at it.

What surprised you about your trade?

I was surprised that there aren’t as many women/minorities in sheet metal as I expected.

What’s the coolest job you’ve worked on?

The Gannon University (Basketball Stadium) project in Erie, Pa. We installed spiral duct at the top of the gym and had to lift the units super high in a short amount of space — we were only allowed to block a single lane. Some of the spiral was over 28 inches and had to be pulled through the window.

What traits do you think a good sheet metal worker has?

A good sheet metal worker has to be willing to learn from and listen to others.

Why sheet metal?

I took Vo-Tech for HVAC and found a passion for it.

Tool you can’t live without?

Hammer, screwdriver, snips, tape measure and a sharpie.

Best advice you got as an apprentice?

Learn as much as you can while you have the opportunity.

Best advice for an apprentice?

Enjoy your time in school and make connections with your peers, because you never know if you or they may need help from each other in the future. School flies by, so make sure you ask questions when unsure.
