Sister Dee Lee, an apprentice at SMART Local 85 (Atlanta, Ga.), entered the sheet metal trade at 39 years old after working in a dead-end retail job. She discovered the union during a difficult period and dedicated her first few months to learning in the fabrication shop. In January 2023, Sister Lee attended her first women’s committee meeting and recognized a need within her local for greater unity and solidarity among members, work she felt uniquely prepared to support.
Sister Lee began her apprenticeship in August 2023 and quickly developed a deep appreciation for the craft. She continues to be amazed by the many ways sheet metal knowledge can be applied. Through SMART, Sister Lee has gained access to a future and retirement she never imagined possible.
Outside of work, Sister Lee enjoys camping, geocaching and spending time with her chosen family. She also loves jigsaw puzzles along with various arts and crafts; anything that allows her to create, build and explore. Passionate about her community, Sister Lee is dedicated to encouraging others to come together and advocate for the workers of America.
