Every three hours, a person or vehicle is hit by a train in the United States.
Think about that for a moment. That’s a jarring statistic that impacts communities nationwide.
That’s why SMART-TD supports Operation Lifesaver, Inc.’s (OLI) See Tracks? Think Train® Week, which kicks off today and runs through September 21.

According to OLI, more than 2,300 people are hurt or killed each year in railroad crossing and trespass incidents in North America, and more than 60% of collisions happen at crossing with clearly visible gates and lights.
That’s why Operation Lifesaver is committed to reducing preventable crashes, injuries, and deaths on and near railroad tracks, not just this week but all year long.
Publicizing Rail Safety
Now in its ninth year, formerly known as Rail Safety Week, OLI places the importance of safety when walking or driving near railroad tracks in the spotlight. Activities, in conjunction with other organizations, take place throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Each day focuses on a different rail safety topic, including Operation Clear Track with law enforcement and first responders, crossing safety, transit safety, and Wearing Red for Rail Safety.
How You Can Help #STOPTrackTragedies
Operation Lifesaver has compiled a list of ways that you can get involved with See Tracks? Think Train® Week, many of which are easy to do from home, including…
- Share the rail safety message during See Tracks? Think Train® Week and beyond.
- Know the facts. Recognize the signs. Make good decisions around tracks and trains and encourage others to do the same.
- Consider volunteering with Operation Lifesaver to share the rail safety education message.
