Washington, D.C. — Today President Biden nominated Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. In response, SMART issued the following statement.

“We commend President Biden’s historic nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court. Her experience, credentials, dedication to public service and commitment to the rule of law illustrate that she will safeguard the rights and freedoms of working people. While serving as an appeals court judge, Judge Jackson issued a ruling ending a Trump administration policy that restricted collective bargaining rights of public-sector workers. The U.S. Supreme Court should reflect the diversity of the communities that it serves, and this nomination is an important step in helping achieve a fair judicial system. We urge the Senate to swiftly confirm her nomination.”

SMOHIT’s 2022 Safety Champions Conference is all virtual and will take place in your home or office.

This year’s conference theme is “Occupational Wellness” and focuses on the whole person — body, mind and spirit — in alignment with SMOHIT’s continuing mission to build and nurture a culture and climate of safety and health in the sheet metal industry. The conference is an excellent venue for sharing information, ideas and solutions that can be implemented at the local level right away. It creates a forum for dialogue and critical thinking about workplace mental health challenges and promotes help-seeking and help-giving, with an emphasis on suicide prevention.

The conference features interactive workshops facilitated by Phillip Ragain and Kevin Pope of the RAD Group; participation from a diverse group of attendees; skills development; a search for solutions to safety challenges in attendees’ areas; best practices; Safety Champion and Safety Design awards ceremonies; valuable raffle prizes; a gift welcome packet and much more. Kevin Pope will also serve as keynote for the conference, speaking on the subject of lessons learned from leading high-performance teams. Pope is a retired 25-year Navy SEAL Master Chief with 11 international deployments, including eight combat tours. Throughout his career, he has managed the operational requirements for 8,600 personnel, including SEAL, SWCC, support technicians and civilian government employees deployed to 78 countries daily.

The conference is open to all SMART and SMACNA members in good standing.

The August 2021 Talking SMART episode focused on union mentorship, mutual support in the workplace, and working proactively to address issues such as hazing, bullying and discrimination. Our featured guests were SMART Director of Special Projects Louise Medina and SMART Local 265 member Mike Powers.

Every member has had at least one person in his or her career who has stood up for them, provided formal or informal union mentorship, or been there in times of crisis or need. SMART launched the “I Got Your Back” campaign as a way to recognize those who have stepped up and stood up for what’s right and to reinforce a culture of paying it forward.

Sister Medina served as a business representative at Local 265 and president of the SMART Recruitment and Retention Council; in addition to director of special projects, she is also a member of the BE4ALL Committee. Brother Powers is also a Local 265 member who now serves as a trustee at his local. He began as an apprentice at Wiesbrook sheet metal and spent his apprenticeship and following journeyperson years learning all aspects of architectural and job management.  

In addition, General President Joseph Sellers joined Talking SMART for open mic segment at the end of the episode. He responded to a question about what SMART is doing to promote workplace environments that are free of bullying, harassment, hazing and discrimination.

Brother Dragoo followed his father into the railroad industry and hired on as a conductor for Union Pacific in 2005. He has served as a legislative representative of Local 1503 in Marysville, Kansas, been the state’s legislative director since 2010 and helped lead efforts to create a transportation safety task force in his state. Ty spoke with us about his work in Kansas, including two-person crew legislation and the downsides of so-called precision scheduled railroad.

Bob Borgeson

Brother Borgeson represented SMART in a state – Nebraska – with a high concentration of Transportation Division members, where he worked to bring greater public attention to the important work our members do. Bob spoke with us about the negative impacts of long trains, efforts to move two-person crew legislation in Nebraska, and the innovative media and outreach tools SMART has used recently to bring attention to key rail safety issues in his state.

In addition, listen for the open mic segment with SMART General President Joseph Sellers at the end of this episode. He responded to multiple questions that have come in from SMART members asking about what steps the Biden-Harris administration has taken to address the multiemployer pension crisis.
